Support Groups

A number of Support Groups meet in the Kilkenny Education Centre.

These groups are independent of the centre and the following information is correct at the time of posting. Changes should be notified to the centre at kecsec@eircom.net.

Carlow/Kilkenny Learning Support Group

Meetings are held once a term from 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm. The purpose of the meetings is to support each other as Learning Support teachers and to facilitate discussion on issues relating to Special Needs Education. Guest Speakers are often invited to speak on these issues, both at these meetings and at evening meetings.

There is a section in the Education Centre library devoted to the area of Learning Support. Here many useful reference books can be found relating to Dyslexia, Spelling, Reading etc. If you would like to find out more about our group or related matters please phone Kilkenny Education Centre or you can email us learningsupportkec@eircom.net

• Elements of a Whole School Policy for Learning Support 
  This framework contains the elements which a school might address in their whole school policy on Learning Support.
• Individual Profile and Learning Programme (IPLP)
  An Individual Profile and Learning Programme (IPLP) is prepared for each pupil who has been selected for supplementary teaching.
• Weekly Planning and Progress Record
  The Weekly Planning and Progress Record is completed by the learning support teacher for each individual or group of pupils who is in receipt of supplementary teaching.
• Supplementary Teaching: Selection and Implementation
  The process of selecting pupils for supplementary teaching is outlined on pg.60 of the Learning Support Guidelines.
• Developing Phonological Awareness: A Selection of Resources
  A Selection of Resources outlines some resources which teachers may find useful in developing phonological awareness at infant level.
• Developing Phonological Awareness in Infants classes: 
  This document looks at three levels of phonological awareness-syllabic awareness, onset-rime awareness and phonemic awareness.

Guidance Counsellors from the Kilkenny/Carlow/Laois region meet on a regular basis in Kilkenny Education Centre.
